AT&T abandons hybrid model with five-day office work requirement

AT&T will require all office employees to work on-site five days a week starting January 2025, tightening its return-to-office policy. This change marks a departure from the hybrid work model implemented last year, which allowed employees to work in-person three days a week at one of nine designated corporate hubs. The move aligns AT&T with other major corporations reversing flexible pandemic-era work arrangements.

The Dallas-based telecom giant confirmed the mandate, emphasizing its focus on collaboration and innovation. “The majority of our employees and leaders never stopped working on location for the full work week – even during the pandemic,” an AT&T spokesperson stated. The company is also investing in updating its office spaces to accommodate the shift, as some workers have raised concerns over workspace availability.

In mid-2023, AT&T consolidated its U.S. office network from over 300 locations to nine corporate hubs in cities including Dallas, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. This change required thousands of employees to relocate or seek alternative employment. Around 18,000 management employees returned to these hubs, according to the company’s proxy statement earlier this year.

The stricter return-to-office policy mirrors similar actions by other large corporations. Amazon, for instance, recently announced a five-day office requirement but has faced delays in implementation due to capacity issues at some locations. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has reiterated the company’s belief in the benefits of in-person work, sparking mixed reactions from employees accustomed to remote arrangements.

AT&T’s new policy underscores a broader industry trend as companies reassess remote work. Leaders at firms like JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Google have expressed skepticism about the impact of remote work on productivity and innovation. The company’s investments in Atlanta, including the leasing of two buildings it had previously vacated, reflect its commitment to expanding office operations. AT&T’s approach signals its alignment with companies prioritizing physical presence while managing workforce adaptation to the post-pandemic workplace environment. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
